Abilene Regional Medical Center History

Abilene Regional Medical Center was built in 1968 as West Texas Medical Center by a group of physicians and investors. The hospital's Heart team performed the Texas Midwest's first heart catheterization in 1970 as well as the area's first open heart surgery.

In 1984, the hospital moved to it's new home on a 33-acre campus in South Abilene, now the city's high growth area. In 1992 the Abilene Heart & Vascular Institute opened, followed by the addition of a pediatric cardiology clinic in 1996. Abilene Regional's success rate for open-heart surgery exceeds the state and national averages.

Abilene Regional continues to expand with the 2004 joint venture with Sears Methodist Retirement Systems in opening the Senior Healthcare Center, which offers the senior citizen population specialized care and is staffed by a physician with a board certification in geriatrics.

More than 200 physicians, representing 44 areas of medical specialization, and 750 employees provide care at our 231-bed hospital. Abilene Regional has plenty of room to grow and we continue to make our hospital the choice in healthcare.
