Wound Care
Abilene Regional Medical Center offers specialized, outpatient care for non-healing wounds, including hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Our team of doctors, nurse practitioners and nurses provide treatments to promote healing of chronic wounds and help patients recover as quickly as possible.
To determine the best course of treatment, we will do a thorough evaluation of your wound and current health status. Health care professionals who specialize in wound healing will educate you about the cause of your wound, and keep you informed throughout the healing process. They will provide information on how to prevent wounds from happening, caring for your wound, and recognizing early signs of complications.

What is hyperbaric oxygen therapy?
Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) chambers work by surrounding the patient with 100 percent oxygen at higher than normal atmospheric pressure in sessions, or dives, that last from 90 minutes to two hours. This increases the amount of oxygen in the patient’s blood allowing the wounds to heal from the inside out. It is a painless, proven way to help the body heal. Hyperbaric oxygen treatments are beneficial for patients who have certain types of complicated or slow-healing wounds, such as bone infections or diabetic foot ulcers. The treatments work in conjunction with other treatments, such as antibiotics, to accelerate the healing process.
The HBO chambers resemble a reclining bed encased in a clear acrylic shell nearly a yard in diameter. Patients can listen to music or watch movies on televisions and VCR/DVD players mounted above the chamber. Patients also remain in constant contact with those outside the chamber through an intercom and private handset. The only physical sensation resulting from the treatment is a slight pressure on the eardrum, like that felt when a plane lands, as the air in the chamber is compressed.
